Humility is a virtue that is greatly valued in the Bible.
In Philippians 2:3-4, we read, “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
This verse reminds us that humility means putting others first, not seeking to be better than others or to receive recognition and praise for ourselves. It means recognizing that we are all equal in the eyes of God and that our worth comes not from our accomplishments or status, but from our identity as beloved children of God.
Jesus Himself demonstrated incredible humility during His time on earth.
In Philippians 2:5-8, we read, “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
Jesus chose to become a servant and to sacrifice Himself for the sake of humanity. He did not seek to elevate Himself or to demand recognition for His divine nature, but instead He showed incredible love and compassion for all people.
It is not easy being humble in a world like the one we live in. But as Christians, we are called to be different. We are called to follow the example of Christ and to live with a spirit of humility, putting others first and recognizing our own limitations and weaknesses.
In James 4:6, we read, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
When we are humble, we are able to receive the grace and blessings that God wants to give us. We are able to recognize our need for God’s help and to rely on his strength rather than our own. And when we put others first and seek to serve them, we are reflecting the love of Christ to the world.
Today, let’s be more humble in our thoughts, words, and actions. Let’s go above and beyond to put others first and seek to serve those around us.
I pray we remember the incredible example of Christ, who humbled Himself for the sake of all people. May we be filled with the love and grace of God, and may we reflect that love to others through our humility.
