Fear is something that we all face in our lives.
It can come in many forms, such as fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of the unknown, or fear of the future.
But as Christians, we have a powerful ally in our battle against fear:
Jesus Christ.
In the Bible, we read of countless examples of folks who faced fear… but they were able to overcome it with the help of God.
For example, when the Israelites were facing the Red Sea with the Egyptian army behind them, they were filled with fear. But Moses told them, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today” (Exodus 14:13). And indeed, God parted the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to escape their enemies.
Similarly, when the disciples were caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilee, they were filled with fear.
But Jesus calmed the storm and said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). Jesus reminded them that they didn’t need to be afraid because He was with them.
So how can we overcome fear with Jesus?
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Remember that God is in control.
Whatever we’re afraid of, we can trust that God is still in charge. He knows our fears and He promises to be with us through them. As the psalmist writes, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4).
Focus on God’s promises.
The Bible is full of promises from God that we can cling to when we’re afraid. For example, Jesus said, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). We can trust that He will never leave us or forsake us.
Pray for strength and courage.
When we’re feeling overwhelmed by fear, we can turn to God in prayer. He promises to give us strength and courage when we need it. As the apostle Paul wrote, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).
Surround yourself with support.
We don’t have to face our fears alone. God has given us a community of believers to support us and encourage us. We can lean on our brothers and sisters in Christ for help and strength.
Listen, fear is a natural human emotion, but we don’t have to let it control us.
With Jesus by our side, we can overcome our fears and trust in His promises. As we face our fears, let us hold fast to the words of the apostle John: “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18).
