We know that we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God.
But the good news is that God loves us so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins so that we can be forgiven and have eternal life.
So, does this mean forgiveness is automatic?
The Bible tells us in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This verse says that if we confess our sins, God will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
But, we also need to repent and ask God to forgive us. Repentance means turning away from our sins and turning towards God. It means acknowledging that we have sinned against God and asking Him for forgiveness.
Why is repentance and forgiveness so important?
Sin separates us from God and hinders our ability to have a close relationship with Him. Repentance and forgiveness allow us to restore that relationship and draw closer to Him.
Repentance is important for our own well-being. Sin can have negative consequences in our lives, causing us to feel guilt, shame, and regret.
It’s also important for our relationships with others. When we sin against others, it can damage our relationships with them. Repentance and forgiveness allow us to make amends and attempt to restore those relationships.
Repentance means changing our mind and heart about the sin we have committed, and choosing to live differently. Repentance is not just feeling sorry for what we have done, but it is a genuine change in our behavior.
The Bible tells us in Acts 2:38, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Forgiveness is not earned or deserved, but it is a gift from God.
The ultimate example of forgiveness is seen in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Through His death and resurrection, we can receive forgiveness for our sins.
Repentance and forgiveness go hand in hand. We cannot receive forgiveness without first repenting of our sins. And when we repent and ask for forgiveness, God is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Let’s be clear, forgiveness does not mean that there are no consequences for our actions. It does not mean that we can continue to sin without any repercussions. Rather, forgiveness means that we are pardoned for our sins and can be restored to a right relationship with God.
